Abstract

Suture threads are an essential part of dental surgeries, and their quality is directly related to the results of the surgeries. Lately, dentistry has turned to the use of monofilament wires. Therefore, the objective of this case series was to compare the clinical evolution of tissue repair using two different types of polyamide suture threads, 5.0, stained black in the intraoral environment. For this case series, 10 patients, who underwent bilateral intraoral surgeries, normoreactive, non- pregnant/lactating, over 18 years-old, who were followed for 10 days after the surgeries for clinical evaluation, were included. The surgeon responsible for the surgeries also removed the sutures and clinically evaluated the presence or absence of suture dehiscence, purulent exudate, and edema for each surgical site. This and a second observer made the assessments through photographs obtained from the immediate postoperative (PO) period, 10 days after surgery, and immediately on the tenth day after suture removal, which included the comparison between groups: were the images in the POs the same or different? At the end of the evaluation period, both threads showed very similar results, with no flap dehiscence, infection, hemorrhage, or exacerbated edema. Differences in wire handling were observed, but did not affect the clinical result. In this case series, it appears that the black- stained monofilament threads for intraoral sutures presented similar results at the end of the healing period. Clinical studies with larger samples may present clinical results that are different from those observed.
